Lee Teitel


Lee Teitel is deeply practiced in the work of teaching and consulting on Adaptive Leadership, having worked for more than 15 years in educational leadership as a professor at the University of Massachusetts and as a lecturer and visiting professor (2004-2005) at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education. He recently became the founding director of the Executive Leadership Program for Educators, an innovative national effort based at Harvard that works with state commissioners of education and school superintendents, along with their leadership teams and key stakeholders. to bring high-quality teaching and learning to scale in urban and high-need districts.

With his CLA colleagues, Lee has worked with hundreds of school superintendents and principals across the country to help them understand and use Adaptive Leadership in their daily work. He has coached individual superintendents, helped set up on-going learning networks among superintendents and among principals, and has worked with intact leadership teams to support them in applying Adaptive Leadership ideas to the challenges facing their districts and schools. He also co-facilitates the Connecticut Network School Superintendents (with Richard Elmore) and has extensive experience in developing and evaluating leadership development programs for universities and school districts.

Lee has researched, published, and spoken widely on leadership issues and school/university partnerships. His most recent book is The Professional Development School Handbook (Corwin, 2003). Dr. Teitel holds both undergraduate and graduate degrees from Harvard as well as a graduate degree from Tufts University.
